org-contacts is an emacs extension which allows to manage contacts using org-mode. It can be a replacement to bbdb.
It can be used in gnus as well with its excellent support for auto-complete feature - we can just type the first few characters and press the TAB key for auto-complete; in case of groups, insert a + and type the group to populate all emails.
