Steps to configure Indian Languages as keyboard input method on Debian,

  1. Install ibus - sudo apt-get install ibus ibus-m17n ibus-gtk ibus-gtk3 ibus-qt4
  2. Install fonts-indic, a metapackage which depends on various free Indian language font packages available in Debian - sudo apt-get install fonts-indic
  3. Setup Input Methods by executing im-setup ; add appropriate input languages. For each language, there may be multiple input methods though I normally prefer methods that support itrans or phonetic
  4. Restart X (or logout and login) to ensure changes are taken into effect
  5. Upon login, current language will be shown in the panel; you may change the input language by selecting the appropriate menu by clicking the panel. Alternatively, you may use the keyboard shortcut, to cycle through the available input languages; by default + space will be configured
